An honest comparison

BOSS HQ, Odoo and Rippling

Three ways to run a business on software. They are not really competing for the same job, and the useful question is not which is best — it is which one is built for the business you actually have.
One app, hosted for you
BOSS HQ

A complete business operating system for owner-run companies across several industries at once. Books, staff, stock, customers and the paper trail, in one place you own.

No per-user fee. Hosted, patched and backed up for you.
Modular ERP
Odoo

An enormous catalog of business apps you assemble into a system. Mature accounting, strong manufacturing, real eCommerce, a global partner network.

Per user, per month, per tier — plus implementation.
Workforce platform
Rippling

Everything that happens to an employee — payroll, benefits, devices, app access — automated from one hire event. Exceptional at that, and not an accounting system.

Per employee, per month, per module.
The short version

What each one is actually for

Rippling is the best of the three at employing people. If your business is fifty knowledge workers on laptops and your hard problem is onboarding, benefits and device control, it is very good, and that ground is Rippling’s. Rippling is not a general ledger and does not pretend to be — it syncs to QuickBooks or NetSuite for the accounting.

Odoo is the broadest. If you need real manufacturing planning, a website and shop built in, or you operate in a country whose tax rules need a maintained localization, it has more than BOSS HQ and probably always will. The cost is complexity: most companies end up paying an implementation partner, and the bill grows with every app and every user.

BOSS HQ is for the owner who runs several different kinds of business and is tired of five systems that do not talk. A recycling plant, two hotels, some rental property and a hardware store — in one app, on one set of books, with one login.

The question is not which is best. It is which one was built for the business you actually have.

What we don't do yet

A comparison that only lists wins is not one you should trust. These are the things we leave to others for now, so you can decide with the whole picture. For some businesses one of them settles it, and we would rather you knew now.

The honest recommendation

Which one you should buy

Choose BOSS HQ if…

You own several different kinds of business and want one set of books across all of them. You are tired of paying per seat for staff who log in twice a week. You want to be able to copy your data out any day. You care about the controls — who approved that refund, who counted that register, who signed for that delivery — because you have been burned before.

Choose Odoo if…

You manufacture things and need real production planning. You sell in several countries and need maintained tax localizations. Your website is your shop window. You have budget for an implementation partner and want an ecosystem you can hire into.

Choose Rippling if…

Your hardest problem is people, not product. You are hiring quickly, you issue laptops, you administer benefits, and you want one hire event to trigger all of it. Keep your accounting where it is — Rippling will sync to it.

There is also a combination worth naming: some businesses run BOSS HQ for operations and books and keep a specialist payroll filing service alongside it. That costs less than Rippling and covers more of the shop floor.
